Quick Checks Version 1.04 Quick Checks is a program that I designed in order to allow my standard bank checks to be printed using Quicken 3/4 for Windows. This version is being made available to users who wish to evaluate this method of printing checks from Quicken. Any user feedback including questions, comments, bug reports and feature requests is appreciated. It should be noted that this unregistered version of Quick Checks will expire on 8/31/95. Users of Quicken 3 for Windows are urged to check the release number of Quicken they are running. This can be done by starting Quicken 3 for Windows, clicking on the 'Help' menu and then holding down shift while clicking on 'About'. This should display a dialog box indicating your Quicken 3 for Windows release number. There have been some reports of problems utilizing Quick Checks with Quicken 3 for Windows release 6 and earlier. Quicken 3 for Windows users are urged to upgrade to release 7. This upgrade is available on Compuserve's Intuit forum. The following is a partial list of enhancements under consideration for the next release: 1) Support for different check layouts for each account. 2) Better support for landscape mode check printing. 3) Support for other check sizes. 4) Support for laser printer and tractor feed checks with more than one check per page. 5) Automatic update of Quicken with check numbers. Installing and using Quick Checks Quick Checks can be installed by running its setup program using the Program Manager File Run command or File Manager. It is recommended that Quick Checks be installed in your Quicken 3/4 for Windows directory. A Quick Checks icon will be added to your Quicken group. Once installed run Quick Checks by double clicking on the Quick Checks icon in the Quicken group under Program Manager. If Quicken 3 for Windows in not already running, it will be started. Select the Layout button (or menu item) to bring up the Check Layout dialog box. The Check Layout dialog box allows the size and position of check fields to be adjusted to match your checks. Select a field by clicking on it. You can now move the field by dragging it with the mouse or by altering the coordinates displayed on the toolbar. Similarly you may resize a field by grabbing an end or by entering a new size on the toolbar. It may be helpful to print this form and overlay it over one of your checks to aid in alignment. Once you have a good match with your checks, close the Check Layout dialog box and proceed to the Page Layout dialog box. This dialog box will let you properly position the check relative to top left edge of a printer page. Although this alignment can be a bit tedious, it only needs to be done once. Once you believe your alignment is correct it is time for the real test. Using Quicken create a check or account entry with the Num field marked "Print". Now go back to Quick Checks and select the account you just made the entry in from the Account list box. After a slight pause Quick Checks should display your entry. Select the entry by clicking on it and then select print. Overlay the printout on one of your checks to double check the alignment. Make any needed final adjustments. It is now time to try printing an actual check. You must determine based on your printer and your checks the best way to feed checks into the printer. I have an HP Deskjet 500 and I feed checks one at a time through the envelope feeder. I suspect that this is likely to be the best strategy for any printer with a envelope feeder. You can now use Quick Checks to print Quicken checks as follows. Enter the checks into your Quicken accounts either through the Check writing dialog box or by making ledger entries with the check number marked print. Then start Quick Checks and select the account you wish to print checks for. Checks can now be printed one at a time by selecting them and clicking on print, or the entire list can be printed by selecting Print All. After the checks are printed close Quick Checks and go back to Quicken. Select the account you printed checks for from the account list. Now change the check number field for each check you printed from "Print" to the number on the check you just printed. Trouble Shooting If your printer will feed your checks through the envelope feeder, but requires them to be printed in a landscape mode. Then the following notes may help: Go to control panel, and double click on the printers icon. When the printers dialog box comes up, select setup. You should be able to change the printer from portrait to landscape. The next version will attempt to make portrait vs. landscape and paper path selection easier.
